Blackmagic RAW (.BRAW) files created from film scans using the Blackmagic Design Blackmagic Cintel Scanner 8/16/35mm HDR workflows are a modern, high-performance RAW format designed to preserve the full visual character of motion-picture film while remaining efficient and practical for post-production. When scanning to .BRAW, the file retains high-bit-depth image data with wide dynamic range, fine grain detail, and accurate color information, allowing highlights, shadows, and midtones to be adjusted non-destructively without baking in permanent image decisions. Unlike traditional DPX or Cineon image sequences, which generate extremely large files and fixed color values, .BRAW uses advanced compression to significantly reduce storage needs while maintaining visually lossless quality and full creative flexibility. Each .BRAW file also embeds extensive metadata, including scan parameters, exposure controls, color science settings, and timecode, making it well suited for archival, restoration, and professional color workflows. .BRAW files are natively supported in DaVinci Resolve, offering real-time playback, GPU acceleration, and full RAW controls for grading and finishing. With the free Blackmagic RAW plugin installed, .BRAW files can also be used in Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Adobe Media Encoder, allowing seamless integration into Adobe-based editing and delivery pipelines. For advanced Adobe workflows, BRAW Studio provides additional controls and enhanced color tools. Overall, .BRAW from the Cintel Scanner delivers an ideal balance of image quality, flexibility, and efficiency for modern film scanning and post-production.
